Carbon Monoxide (CO)

Carbon monoxide gas is used in several industrial applications including the chemical, food and medical industries. Carbon monoxide gas consists of one carbon atom and one oxygen atom. It is a toxic gas which is produced from the partial oxidation of carbon containing compounds in situations where there is not enough oxygen present to produce carbon dioxide.

Carbon monoxide is produced naturally during animal metabolism, photochemical reactions in the troposphere and from volcanoes, forest fires and other forms of combustion. Human activities increase the concentration of carbon monoxide, particularly in urban areas. The main source is internal combustion processes from transportation and industrial activity causing temporary atmospheric CO pollution.
