Hydrogen chloride is a colourless to slightly yellow, corrosive, non-flammable gas that is heavier than air and has a strong irritating odour. Hydrogen chloride has many uses, including cleaning, pickling, electroplating metals, tanning leather, and refining and producing a wide variety of products. Hydrogen chloride can be formed during the burning of many plastics. In the semi-conductor industry, it is used to both etch semiconductor crystals and to purify silicon via trichlorosilane. Hydrogen chloride is also used in the production of hard metal and is also used in pharmaceutical synthesis.
