Can you calibrate a gas detector without a gas cylinder?
Yes. A calibration gas generator produces ppm-level, NIST-traceable calibration gas on demand from a liquid, with a background of ambient air, so there is no cylinder to store, ship or dispose of. ACD generators cover up to eight reactive gases (chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen, NO and HCN) from 50 ppb to 50 ppm, and the GazCal generator produces 0.1 to 20 ppm chlorine in a field-ready, tough, rugged unit. Spantech is both the only directly authorised UK distributor of ACD and the UK manufacturer and service centre for GazCal.
Calibration Gas Generators
Portable, on-demand gas calibration solutions.
Traditionally, calibration gas was supplied in cylinders, but this method has notable limitations. ACD gas generators overcome many of these limitations:
- Easy to transport by air
- Variable flow rates up to 1 LPM and ppm levels on demand
- Can use external pumps up to 10 LPM
- PPM levels from 50 ppb to 50 ppm
- Up to eight gases from one unit – chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen, NO and HCN
- Gas supplied on demand
- NIST traceable calibrations
- ISO 6145-11 compliant
- High accuracy
- Portable and easy to carry
- The most economical low-cost option over time
Calibration gas cylinders are typically mostly filled with clean, dry air, making them highly inefficient. In a 10 PPM cylinder, for instance, 99.999% of the content is air. Calibration gas generators, on the other hand, leverage the ambient air at the calibration point, blending it with the desired gas, offering significant advantages.
Calibration gas generators produce gas on demand, eliminating the need for storage. This approach provides several benefits compared to older methods, as the gas is only generated when required, and it is never pressurized. Calibration gas generators are safe for air transport and do not degrade over time. Many customers use the same calibration source for 5, 10, or even 15 years without any loss of calibration quality, given annual service checks (note: NIST traceable calibrations have to be repeated every 12 months to keep them valid).
The on-demand gas generation enables a single calibration source to produce adjustable concentrations, unlike cylinders, which offer fixed concentrations. PPM levels from 50 ppb to 50 ppm.

Advanced Calibration Designs
Advanced Calibration Designs (ACD) was founded in 1988 with the mission to develop and manufacture the most dependable, accurate, reliable, and affordable gas calibration standards in the world.

SemeaTech
Disposable calibrators give a cheap and reliable source of HF, HCl and CH₂O at ppm level for bump testing, and the benchtop generator produces ppm-level calibration gas from diffusion tubes.
ACD and GazCal Gas Generators vs Gas Cylinders
Gas generators make calibration gas only when you need it. Used correctly, they use far less gas than a cylinder, with no gas wasted between calibrations.
